Apartment Life

Let me start this post off by saying this is an excellent example of why I call this blog “Colorful Commotion.” I always try to find a bright spot in the ball of crap that life can be. And right now, i’m trying REALLY REALLY hard.

In college, Fiance and I moved in together my junior year. We looked high and low for the right apartment in our college town, and ended up moving to a community that was a little further from campus and downtown, but gave us the most value, space, and comfort for our money. We didn’t know it at the time, but we were in apartment heaven. Excuse me while I reminisce…

Our old living room. It was about the same size as my whole apartment is now.

Some of my best friends all in the same place

Random shopping carts outside our patio. Yes, I even miss this.

Beautiful snowy Blacksburg…

I guess I should let you know that all of this Blacksburg nostalgia has been brought on by the fact that last night, our kitchen sink leaked underneath, all over the floor. The call we made to maintenance was the 4th since the new year. We have had no hot water, no power, no privacy for so many weeks now that I feel like the maintenance team should be splitting our rent. And yet, I feel like I can’t complain, because we scored this place with low rent and a timeline we absolutely had to have.

So, where is the bright spot in this mess? Well, the immediate bright spot is that knowing maintenance essentially lives here has made me keep my apartment really clean. The bigger bright spot? We live in the place we wanted to live all four years of college. We have a maintenance company that comes quickly and eventually fixes the problem.

I guess the real bright spot is that by the end of the month, we’ll essentially have a brand freaking spanking new apartment. THAT WE NEVER ASKED FOR.

Guess i’m not feeling so bright and shiny after all.

I guess it doesn’t need to be said that I spent my time waiting for the maintenance team planning my next trip to Blacksburg.

Why my job ROCS!

If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, or read my blog regularly, you know that I talk a lot about my job. I REALLY love my job. I know it sounds silly to love a part time job, but I do, I can’t help it.

So what is it that I do? I work for a staffing agency called Responsible Outgoing College Students, or ROCS. We help recent grads get jobs in DC and Northern VA. Simple as that.

What makes us different is that we work specifically with recent grads, and entry level positions. We recruit students directly from job fairs, so companies get only the best candidates sent to them. It’s zero cost to the recent grads, and no cost to employers until we find them a candidate they love.

I love my job because I do business development, which means I get to be on the phone all. day. long. And for a talker like me, thats a huge plus. There are a lot of other perks too! I get to go to networking events, meet business people throughout the area, attend sporting events, and go on outings with my co-workers. We’re a small office, so it’s pretty tight knit.

The best part about ROCS? They care about their employees. Most of you know i’m a full time graduate student, and ROCS is working with me to assure I can continue to work and pay my bills while I go to school. It’s a pretty nice setup.

Enjoy some pictures that demonstrate how awesome ROCS is, and if you need a job in the DC/Northern VA area… sign up and apply with ROCS!

January Birchbox Reveal!

So, one of my favorite parts of each month is when my Birchbox  arrives in the mail. This month I was a little less thrilled than some previous months, mostly because I have products that I do NOT stray from, and this months box contained other company’s versions of these products. However, I was able to share the goodies from this months box with friends, which always makes me happy! Read on to see what I thought about my products, and click on the pictures to be taken to the product page and learn more!

Juice Beauty Daily Essentials Organics To Go.
This is something I will definitely keep for travel… but because of that I didn’t open it or smell the products.

amika Color pHerfection Shampoo.
I am picky about my shampoo, and my stylist just hooked me up with a shampoo that has been working wonders for my hair. Not messing with that combo but this stuff smells GREAT and I have used other products from this company I love!

Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentrè (24-Hour Miracle Cream)
This stuff is miracle cream. It works for everything. I’m not sure how to describe it otherwise but I LOVE it!

Juicy Couture – Viva La Juicy.
I like this scent, but i’m a stickler for the fragrances I already wear. Luckily, my mom snagged this right out of my box – good to know it’s going to good use!

theBalm® cosmetics Put a Lid On It™
So, I love my eyelid primer. I don’t ever put eyeshadow on without it anymore, for any reason. But, i’m partial to my MAC Painterly and so when a good friend mentioned wishing she had gotten this in her box, I passed it on to her. However, if you are out there not using a primer… get on the bandwagon!

Last, but certainly not least, Birchbox included a “magazine” with a TON of easy beauty tips and tricks inside! I have it hanging next to my dresser… it’s really handy!

Still not sure if you should sign up for Birchbox or not? Give it a one month try… what do you have to lose?

Mondays with Mom!

Hello Friends,

Its Monday again and here I am!  Last week I shared with you the ins and outs of aging skin.  To all readers young and old.  If you haven’t heard it enough…sunscreen.  If all of us out there would use sunscreen faithfully, there would be no need for anti aging products.  We would all age gracefully and carry a youthful glow throughout our lives.  The generation I believe most readers here probably are have grown up knowing this to be fact, they did not set foot outside without that medicinal smelling white stuff plastered all over them.  Nowadays the products have advanced to not just sunscreen, but certain kinds for faces, and bodies.  They have put it into our moisturizers and make up and even hair products.  To this day, I actually find the scent of sunscreen pleasant and soothing.  It takes me back to when my children were young and is as delightful to me as the beachy scent of coconut and sand.

Stevie & Mom

Stevie and I when she was a baby!

As for my face,I haven’t seen a big difference, but I do feel it.  Sadly I cannot say which of the products have given me the baby bottom smooth skin on my face but it must be working.  More to come on that one….

Today was spent tasting foods for Stevie’s wedding.  Stevie, her Fiance, Dixie, and I dined privately selecting the dishes to be served  on that special day.  How fun is that???  Events, etc sure knows how to make it taste and look fantastic.  I strongly recommend this step to any of you out there who will need catering.  Unfortunately I cannot tell you what we chose or it won’t be a surprise!  But I can assure you it will be delicious!

Check out the necklace that Stevie and I purchased today.  How appropriate for her and where her life is headed.  And for our relationship.  I love and respect her more than I can ever say.

Necklace from J.Crew

Is it any wonder wiki says this:

Elephant variously interpreted as advice needed; good luck (trunk up); obstacles overcome; remembrance; slow ascent to success; strength; power and wisdom.

Have a great week!

January Cara Box

Since starting this blog, Kaitlyn has been a great source of advice! She talks about everything from how to grow your blog, to being a newlywed, to budget meals and I LOVE her blog. One of the great things she does is connect bloggers to each other to help grow our networks, make friends, and really make someone feel special, with a little gift sent each month. This program is call a Cara Box, and it is easily my favorite part of blogging so far!

This month, my box was sent to me from the super sweet Kaela, who I have absolutely loved getting to know and sharing stories with! Kaela and I discovered a few weeks into our emailing that we don’t live all that far apart, and we share a LOT of similar interests! I was so lucky to have her for my first Cara Box and can’t wait to show you the great stuff she sent me!

January’s box theme was resolutions. Kaela referred to my resolutions blog post, as well as some of the stuff I shared with her through emails… so, here is my AMAZING Cara Box!

Look at all this stuff! She is SO sweet!!!

Adorable note cards to stay in touch… you can bet i’m sending the first one to Kaela!

An ADORABLE “M” notepad… my married last name will start with an “M” and I love collecting the stuff!

A planner… i’m going to use it for blogging organization!

Tea, for the nights when grad school and wedding planning stress me out

For when I just need to pamper myself… also i’m really embarrassed about the cat hair in this picture.

When the tea doesn’t cut it… chocolate sure will!

How CUTE is this picture frame? I can’t wait to put a wedding picture in it!

Very possibly the best thing in my box. This CD is one of the best running mixes EVER and it includes some of my very favorite songs!

A journal! I love to journal and definitely needed a new one. So sweet!

And, last but not least, the “M” for our new home when we move after the wedding. LOVE IT!

Head on over to Kaitlyn’s page if you want to join up with next months Cara Box, and head over to Brooke’s blog to see what I sent her!
